Back From Rothbury

Monday, July 13th, 2009

So, Onit has finally made it back home to New York after a long, intense week of pure social media insanity at the Rothbury Music Festival in Michigan. We were onsite with @merrelloutside making sure that their social media presence at the show was the best it could be.

What did that entail exactly? Oh, nothing much, just taking care of Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and everything in-between. Day after day, we walked the entirety of that festival grounds talking to enterprising young hippies, gazing through the trees in Sherwood Forest, playing four square with the people at Merrell’s booth, and all around just rocking out. Rothbury was rife with positive energy and we were there to distill it into Tweet-sized bites for those of you in cyberspace not lucky enough to snag a ticket.

As usual, most of our focus at the show was on social media, although that wasn’t the only thing going on at Rothbury. Oh no, not by a longshot. Some of you may have guessed by now, but there were in fact several bands playing actual music at this festival. While we couldn’t see everyone there, we were able to catch a number of shows. Being the opinionated folk that we are, we all had favorites.

Let’s start with Roni. By far her favorite show of the week was The Dead and their soothing back-to-back sets of psychedelic serenity. Even though there were non-stop issues with our wristbands, the powers that be saw fit to let our social media alchemists run wild backstage while Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and crew kept the crowd in check with their sublime serenades. We snapped some pics and videos of all the insane debauchery going on backstage, but it’s NSFW, so you’ll just have to contact us directly for that one. When we say NSFW, we mean you can see us dancing in the video, and that’s definitely not appropriate viewing material for any office environment. Surprisingly, Roni’s second favorite appearance was by Hasidic hipster, Matisyahu, despite the kid next to us trying to throw up on her the whole time.

Micah probably made it to the most shows out of the Onit team. He rocked the entire 2-mile stretch of Rothbury all day and all night to capture the very best sights that Festival had to offer. Even after all those tripped out nights watching jam bands while glow sticks flew through the air, Micah would still have to say that his favorite show was put on by Philadelphia experimental rock band, Man Man. Maybe that’s because Man Man stated that their goal was to give people a bad time, and Micah was determined to disappoint. Maybe it’s because the show was just that awesome. We may never know. Oh, and as always, Les Claypool was resplendent in his glory, so there was that too.

Poor Melissa got stuck working in our mobile office for the majority of the festival, but she did manage to sneak out into the light of day a few times at least. Of the performances she saw, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals made to top of her list. She’s just hoping that shout out doesn’t make her sound too uncool in the eyes of today’s youth.

You can check out our Rothbury exploits by visiting Merrell’s YouTube Channel or Onit Marketing’s YouTube Channel. You should be able to live some of the fun that way at least.

Rothbury was just the start of Onit’s Summer shenanigans. With Outdoor Retailer looming ever closer, and PAX and Expo East in September, we still have our work cut out for us. Hopefully, we will see you on the show floor!
